How to Publish a Book

Our Book Publishing Process and Services
Manuscript Evaluation
Before a manuscript is published, you will need an evaluator to check whether it is fit for the audience you target to reach out to.
Our professional evaluators (composed of competent writers and editors) are experienced in manuscript evaluation and critiquing before it is published. They willread and critique your manuscript, assess it for suitability, and analyse the major elements like plot, dialogue, characterization, or structure, coherency, consistency, and organization (in the case of fiction or non-fiction works).
For educational works such as books, our evaluators will check and align your work to the syllabus, content coverage, level of content covered and suitability of the manuscript to the level targeted among other pointers.
We will simply help you publish a manuscript that will undoubtedly pass and be approved by the KICD or any other relevant body responsible for approving educational publications.
DILEV is composed of a team of excellent editors who have worked in different publishing companies. Our editors understand the need for quality in every manuscript they handle. We simply make our clients succeed by polishing their works to the best quality needed by the readers.
We ensure that we follow the right procedure in dealing with any manuscript.
Depending on the timeline given, we follow the following procedure to give out an alluring result out of a manuscript:

STEP ONE: Client-Editor Discussion
After receipt of your work, we assign it to one of our competent editors for evaluation. Before this, we arrange a discussion with the client to discuss on important matters that should be addressed in the manuscript handed over. This step is important in setting a styles sheet, discussing expected outcomes and a follow up order that a client is given in accordance with what should be checked by the editor.
We ensure that the client’s needs are first discussed so that it is used to evaluate achievement of editing purpose and probably to create good working relations between the editor and the client.
The client is briefed on the need of editing, areas that require overhaul and any other matter that the manuscript is required to go through.
We will help you identify the right audience for your manuscript and the level of language relevant to the would-be readers among other considerations.
All these plus other required processes shall be the questions we will be working to give answers to.
STEP TWO: Initial Edit/First Edit/Substantive Editing
The initial or first edit is the most fundamental of our editing process. Our substantive editors are responsible for first edit. Here, we take into account the following:
  • Appropriate content coverage (In case of school books, we check for syllabus coverage too)
  • Appropriate sentence structure use
  • Appropriate level of language-relevant to levels of target audience
  • Use of appropriate English (whether American or British English)
  • Grammar check
  • Punctuation check
  • Word usage
  • Tense agreement
  • Paragraph structure
  • Logical sentence and paragraph flow
  • Consistency of terminologies and facts
  • Organizational consistency and logic
  • Miscellaneous items concerning professional manuscripts.
Our substantive editors ensure that the manuscripts are well reorganized to include every detail required. They work hard to improve the quality of content and structure of the manuscript.
After the first edit, we arrange to meet the client or send the edited copy with all changes recorded through the "Track Changes" function of MS Word or in any format desired by the client.
When you receive the document, you will check against the recommended changes and respond to the comments. This will be very helpful in taking the next step.
STEP THREE: Second Edit/Copyediting
Copyediting follows after we receive the manuscript from the client with the necessary recommendations to be effected. Our copyeditors will include all the changes you feel are necessary. This is also the stage where finer details are checked to ensure that such simple mistakes as grammar, misspellings and style error are corrected.
STEP FOUR: Final Editing and Proofreading
Before we hand the document to our clients, we take it through our proofreaders to give it a final touch. This is important especially in ensuring that the document comes out clean and perfect for any targeted readers.
A final proofread includes the following:
·       Spelling check
·       Grammar check
  • Word usage
  • Tense agreement
  • Sentence structure
  • Paragraph structure
  • Logical sentence and paragraph flow
  • Punctuation check

Proofreading involves careful and keen checking of the document to ensure that it is mistakes-free or error free. This process is done by our proofreaders who understand the need for fine-details-check. For manuscripts we have not handled from initial stages, the proofreading process involves the following:
  • Spelling check
  • Grammar check
  • Word usage
  • Tense agreement
  • Sentence structure
  • Paragraph structure
  • Logical sentence and paragraph flow
  • Punctuation check
For manuscripts we have handled from editing phase, we also check whether the changes introduced in editing phase have all been effected.
Our proofreaders make sure that no errors pass or are introduced during this process. They set the document with correct tone to the targeted audience. They may also read typeset pages a final time to catch any typographical errors before the pages are sent to print.

Designing and Layout
This is the process that involves the formatting, design and layout of the manuscript in a readable form by experienced designers. The kind of layout and design is chosen on accounts of the type of the book and the target readers. For instance, the layout and design of a Nursery School book is different from that of a Secondary School book.
Before a book is presented for binding and printing, it is taken for filming as the last stage.
Printing and binding
When all the above processes are done, the book is ready for printing and biding. The print run will depend on the number agreed upon by the author and the publisher. A bigger number (bulk printing) is advised to cut on costs of printing.

DILEV LIMITED is giving you a chance to self-publish your materials.
